So here is my solution to climate change, third world development, and environmental degradation all rolled into one. I expect at least one Nobel Prize.
I want to pay anyone making less than a dollar a day, one dollar a day to plant trees. This would instantly eliminate everyone on the planet living on less than a dollar a day, thereby solving one of the biggest problems to plague development advocates for the last few decades. Tree planting would serve to rebuild the ecosystems of environmentally decimated areas, prevent soil erosion, moderate climate, and provide a sustainable forestry industry a few decades down the road.
In a few decades, perhaps sooner, there will also be a sustainable forestry industry created as the first trees to be planted will be able to be harvested and sold, sustaining economic growth.
Perhaps the greatest thing about this program is that it in effect “trickle up”. All the money will go to the poorest people in their respective countries. Because of this nearly all of the money will be spent on necessities. This infusion of wealth will generate additional demand and employment in food production, and beyond as national income rises. With more, and higher paying jobs available, people could begin to transition from tree planting to the regular national economy, so the cost and participation in the program should wind down.
I guess in the end, I don’t want a Nobel Prize, I’d settle for the first day’s pay from everyone who benefits from this program.
