Gotta Love Big Oil

The US Supreme Court has reduced the punitive damages for the Exxon Valdez disaster to $500 million from $2.5 billion, which had already been reduced from $5 billion. Well, even 2.5 billion is a lot. We wouldn’t want to burden the oil company with that kind of cost during these times of rising inflation and economic downturn.

I guess we should feel bad for Exxon. They have already paid $3.4 billion to clean up their mess. I could see how they might feel that is enough to warrant asking the Supreme court to reject punitive damages.

BUT WAIT! EXXON MADE FORTY FUCKING BILLION DOLLARS IN 2007. THE $3.4 BILLION WERE TO CLEAN UP THE MESS THAT THEY THEMSELVES MADE!!! WHY DOES THAT COUNT AGAINST A PENALTY FOR DANGEROUS POLICY OR INCOMPETENCE? HOW IS A RULING THAT DOESN’T EVEN ABSORB ONE EIGHTIETH OF ONE YEARS PROFITS SUPPOSED TO ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING. AND THE $3.4 BILLION WAS SPENT OVER TWENTY FUCKING YEARS. BOO FUCKING HOO.

Alaskans should be rioting in the streets. Even with $25,000 each instead of $75,000 they can afford to take a few days off work.
