Are high speed trains the solution to at least a few of America's woes? The Progressive Policy Institute certainly seems to think so, and I'm inclined to agree. Maybe I'm just a sucker for trains, but after spending any time in an airport recently, I think most people would be inclined to agree that being able to show up 5 minutes before your train gets in, showing your ticket, and then getting on, is far preferable to what one must go through at the airport.
If as the article suggests, the trains are used to connect high traffic airports, and especially if some rail service is provided to connect the airport with its downtown, this could be a revolution in the way Americans travel. Not to mention all of the blue collar jobs which would be created by a project of this nature.
Maybe it isn't time to start building new infrastructure before the old stuff is repaired, but if people don't seem interested in dealing with the past, at least America could spend money on something which creates jobs at home, and obvious future benefits, instead of on bombs and tax cuts.

The Alberta government has been looking at putting in a high speed rail link between Edmonton and Calgary for the last few years. I don't know what the results of their studies were, though.
