Prokaryotes

So I’m listening to the May 24th Quirks and Quarks and one of the segments is on prokaryotes. In the interview Dr. John Parks from Cardiff University talks about his study of a core drilled 1.6 km down into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Newfoundland. Apparently these prokaryotes live in the sediment at the ocean bottom and were found throughout this 1.6 km long core. Dr. Parks thinks that they could survive in depths of up to 4 km into this sediment. If this is true, he thinks that the prokaryotes could represent 2/3 of the biomass of the entire planet! Who cares about the rainforest if 2/3 of our biomass is under the ocean floor?! Chop it all down and lets look for the cure for cancer in the ocean sediment!
