So apparently Bono thinks that Harper risks tainting his legacy by turning his back on Africa. Really? Seriously? Listen Bono; I’m sure that in your world of African activism, and being a rock star, you may not have much time to appreciate what’s going on in anyone else’s world, but if you are going to open your mouth and try to persuade a country to mend its ways you need to be more informed. Unfortunately for you, and also for many Canadians, the that Harper not caring about Africa will probably not be in the top 10 list of things which Canadians would think could taint his “legacy” if it’s possible for him to have a positive one at this point.

Losing Canada’s leadership on global issues? Is there anyone outside Canada that still believes we have global leadership on any issue? We are still patting ourselves on the back for our work on the landmines ban. Hell, we are still patting ourselves on the back for coming up with the idea of peace keeping despite the fact that we are outnumbered by blue helmeted Pakistanis and others from developing countries. We aren’t looking ahead to the future, we are coasting on our past glories.

Finally, our aid flows have sadly been declining for much longer than Harper has been in government so his legacy will really be to simply continue the legacy of the cost cutting Liberal government. What Bono fails to realize is that you don’t put bad things on your resume, and after Harper isn’t PM anymore, no one in Canada is going to care what he does. If only 3 G-8 countries are going to make their aid pledges, it seems to me that no one else that matters in the world will care either.

Only China cares about Africa (and not so much in the positive "aid and development" sense), and if Bono is going to try and guilt Canadians into asking our government to do more, he needs to come with more compelling arguments if he doesn’t want to embarrass himself.
