So it seems that the Taliban outside Kandahar are digging in and getting ready for what will probably be a Canadian/Afghan attack to drive them out. I'm really not sure what the Taliban expect to accomplish. They might be able to kill some Afghan troops in the assault, but even dug in, going toe to toe with coalition soldiers, supported by aircraft and artillery doesn't seem like a winning formula to me. I just hope that the positions are sufficiently surrounded that when the Taliban start to flee, they don't get far. They should have taken their prison break, which was already a propaganda coup, and fled to the hills to regroup.
Then again, maybe this is part of a broader strategy. While troops flood into Kandahar, it could give the Taliban free reign over other parts of the country. Boy, we would look pretty stupid if we pulled all of our troops to one location to fight a ghost Taliban army, while the rest of their forces ravaged the newly unprotected lands. But they aren't that smart. Are they?
