America's Economic Problems Explained

So the US is looking at nearly half a trillion in deficit spending this year. Sometimes I dream that the US government is spending that money building bridges, dams, roads and other infrastructure, or pouring by the tens or even hundreds of billions into education in order to build the capabilities of young Americans, but no. I’m drawn back into the real world where this spending is not going to such productive purposes. A NYTimes article has the following brilliant paragraph:

"The fiscal year 2009 deficit will be nearly $490 billion due to the bipartisan economic stimulus bill and slowing economy," an administration official said on condition of not being further identified.

Is that so?! Well thank goodness for that! Next year hopefully we won’t need the stimulus bill, and the economy could turn around and we can all live happily ever after…but then why have there been budget deficits in the sunshine years running up to this one? OH RIGHT! MASSIVE TAX CUTS, A HUGELY COSTLY WAR PLUS A COSTLY WAR AND MASSIVE SUBSIDIES TO AMERICAN PRODUCERS OF ALL VARIETIES! Maybe if we looked at dealing with those issues instead of somehow trying to convince people that the only reason the US government is having financial difficulties is because of a few problems that are only happening this year. If people are not hones about the causes of America’s problems, they can never be fixed.
