It was announced today that Ontario is going to join the Western Climate Initiative. I do have mixed feelings about subnational groupings such as this one for dealing with issues where there is a need for national pressure to be applied on reluctant states, but I suppose it is a start. At least it is bringing together Canada’s non oil producing provinces together with California’s economic power that may force the Canadian federal government into substantial national action.
If the rest of Canada, and the non coal producing US states can get on board with a project such as the WCI, perhaps we can convince the hold outs that moving forward together is a better idea than having them yell about how new policies are unfair and destroying their way of life. It would please me quite a bit hear an Albertan tell me that their province is incapable of doing anything other than extracting something from the ground, and that Ontario and Quebec are the real brains behind the Canadian economy, but I don’t believe it. I think given some time to reflect, even the fossil fuel die hards from Alberta and Saskatchewan can be convinced that something other than putting our faith in carbon capture needs to be done.
