I’m sold on the idea of electric cars as a replacement for what people are driving now. Sure there are some problems with battery life (think of your ipod and how much that has improved in the last 5 years), battery disposal (industrial disposal already exists), or cost (again think of the ipod cost/size/storage/battery life/feature ratios to see where the car price can go), but they should all be overcome pretty easily.
The good news is that today GM is starting to talk to utility companies about how best to deal with increased energy consumption due to electric cars on the road. I’m happy that they are starting this discussion now instead of when the car is coming out. If some of the grid transmission and charge timing issues can be worked out in advance, the integration of these cars into people’s every day life should be smooth. If car companies and utilities can get together to lobby governments for grid improvements, even better. Even if we have to bun oil, or god forbid coal to generate the electricity, internal combustion engines are so inefficient compared to a power plant, we are still coming out ahead.
If by 2018 50% of people are driving electric cars, I’ll be a happy man.
