Two Birds With One Stone

So it seems that North Americans are finally turning away from their giant gas guzzling vehicles…or at least they want to. The problem however seems to be that it is impossible to now sell used (or even new) giant trucks or SUVs for anything resembling their purchasing cost, as the market for them in North America has dried up. I have a solution to solve a couple problems at once.

The Canadian and American governments simply need to institute a buyback program for any used (and perhaps existing inventories of new) trucks and SUVs. They could pay a fraction of the sale price based on a premium over the going used vehicle price, and ship whatever they buy to Iraq and Afghanistan to be used by government forces there. We create a subsidy for people to transition to more fuel efficient vehicles, while at the same time delivering resources to governments who complain about perpetual lack of support. While this may not be the kind of support they envision, I have seen a large number of Afghan National Army soldiers riding around in the back of a 1980s pick up, who would probably appreciate a 2006 F-150 if it were on offer.
