Congress – Actually Doing the People’s Work

The day of people being able to talk on cell phones in planes is a day I have been dreading, not so much for myself since I don’t fly much, but I’m feeling other people’s pain vicariously. Because of this I’m happy to see that Congress is moving forward with a ban on cell phones in airplanes. I couldn’t agree more. I don’t know how I would stand a long flight where someone is talking incessantly on their cell phone. What I find more frightening in this article is the idea that airlines may charge people extra to sit in the “no cell area”. I have no problem forcing people to pay to sit in the “cell phone area”, but to make people pay for peace and quite which they already get seems like a cash grab worthy of a backlash.

No matter what happens, here is my last resort option. If the person sitting next to you starts to talk on their cell phone, just have a conversation with yourself on your imaginary cell phone. I can’t believe it is easy to focus on a conversation with that level of noise and ridiculousness right next to you. If they have the right to talk on a cell phone, you certainly have the right to talk to yourself!

Why are we discriminating against people talking on cell phones? If we’re trying to make flying a more pleasant experience, shouldn’t we also ban snorers, crying babies, and people with poor personal hygiene?

Actually, forget that. At this point there is no way to make flying at all pleasant. That ship has sailed. So I should at least be able to bitch about how uncomfortable I am on my phone.

If it isn’t a safety concern, this really isn’t something government should be regulating. Otherwise, I have a list of about 200 things that drive me crazy which I am going to forward to my MP so we can have them banned.
