Welcome to two years ago Mr. Harper

Oh good, I’m glad that Harper is finally realizing that the House of Commons isn’t functioning properly. Too bad he is only about 2 years too late and that the majority of the problem is of his own doing. Instead of sitting down with the opposition to craft legislation as you might expect in a minority government situation, the Conservatives have rammed through whatever they thought they could get away with under threat of another election. Is threatening the opposition any way to govern? Is parliament really functional if the only reason you can get legislation passed is because the only real opposition party has no money and its leadership is in chaos? I don’t think that is reason to be proud of the laws you have passed, or the legislative session you have presided over.

After the first 6 months of Conservative “leadership” the party was out of ideas because they assumed that there would be an election timed around their first budget. Now instead of moving forward on important issues like say climate change, or our seat on the UN security council, we have had to put up with two years of the Conservatives saying “Well at least we are no worse than the Liberals”, the Liberals saying “See, things are just as bad if not worse under the Conservatives than under us”, and all the NDP can muster is “Look at how bad things always are under the two major parties”. The Bloq is the only party that can actually speak the truth of the situation, but sadly they aren’t considerate enough to run an MP in my riding. Maybe if I offered, I could get the nomination…

I will be happy to have another election. I’m hopeful – despite being VERY disappointed by the current US election – that we can have a debate about the issues rather than finger pointing about who is the most corrupt or least competent. I really want a broader choice than gross incompetence or massive corruption.

Adam Radwanksi today described the Conservatives as the ‘natural opposition party.’ Given their behaviour, the moniker seems to fit.

Re: your disappointment in the American election. I hate to say I told you so. Wait, i actually love to say; it makes me feel superior. Elections are never about "the issues." They are dog fights. Modern politics is a screaming match, and its whoever can shriek the loudest and in the most sustained way that wins the day. I am sure in the next election, the Liberals will run ads: black photstills with Julie Couillard and ominous music: "Do you want this mafia harpie selling secrets to China? Vote Stephane Dion." Given John McCain's new ads it wouldn't be all that much of a stretch
