American Election Fever

So I’ve lost hope for the US presidential election. The more I watch, the more it seems that you can simply just make something up and then everyone believes you. No one asks any follow up questions, no one considers the longer term consequences, Americans are mortgaging their children’s futures and they don’t even realize it.

Despite this gloom, I do still have some hope. My overriding thought is that McCain is saying things on taxes that appeal to the base, but he knows a Democratic senate will never agree to. The democrats will make international policy in Congress, and McCain will fix the US' internal politics...that is my dream if it's not Obama for President this fall. It wouldn’t be the revolution I once believed was in the offing, but at least it’s a start.

My new concern however has become what happens if something bad happens to McCain. Even if he doesn’t die, it doesn’t seem unlikely that he could be incapacitated by something in the next four years. If he is unable to serve, we get Palin as President?! Sure, Obama may not have a lot of governance experience, but he plainly wants to be President. Palin was a choice out of right field who didn’t even know what the VP does! Is that who we really want answering the phone at a time when America’s enemies sense weakness?

One final thought. I take comfort in knowing that the Democrats must have a killer add ready to go in the last days before the election. It will go something like this. It will show Bush in many compromising situations from his 8 years. Perhaps him standing under the “Mission Accomplished” banner, or touring New Orleans with some voice over about the past faults of the Bush administration. The montage then shifts to pictures of Bush and McCain together with a voice over of the policies which both of them support. It would end with “A vote for McCain is a vote for another 4 years of Bush”. While I realize that all of this has been said before, it should be a strong message in the days just before voters go to the polls.
