I’m pretty excited about the upcoming Canadian election. Still, I’m not convinced about what it will change. No one is really angry with the current government even if they are sick of how dysfunctional it appears. Still, as I have argued earlier, it is more Harper’s fault than any of the other parties. The way I see things now we are looking at another minority government. It might be a minority liberal government instead of a minority conservative one. Either way, I think Harper will look like more of an idiot after this election. He will have no bigger mandate and continuing problems because he wants to govern like he has a majority. If the current parliament is dysfunctional, the next one will be equally so, and we will have wasted a lot of money and time for no reason. Lets just get together and govern like a real minority parliament should; with compromise instead of dictatorship.
Whoever wins the election will not have a mandate to govern. Dion should talk to the NDP and come up with an agreement on how they would govern if the Liberals form a majority. That cooperation could help move politics forward, and give consensus to the decisions being made in parliament instead of being forced through by fear. I could certainly deal with four years of that kind of government. If Harper has to go the polls early in both elections since his fixed election dates he will look even worse than he already does.
I am worried however about vote splitting giving a lot of opportunity to the Conservatives. If the liberal vote is split with the NDP and the greens. If that conflict gives Harper a majority for four years I’ll be pretty upset. All I can say is this. Vote Liberal this time around. I’m going to find it hard not to vote green in disgust, but Harper scares me too much and the Liberals need by help this time around.
