I don’t know how much to believe what may amount to a propaganda piece on China Daily, but there is talk from the Chinese government of imposing a green tax to help cut emissions. Still, I can turn on the TV and see Harper talking about how a carbon tax will kill Canada’s economy. If China can at least contemplate an emissions tax when they need to sustain blistering economic growth in order to avoid violent revolution, I’m sure that here in Canada, one of the 7 richest countries in the world we can at least have an adult discussion about a carbon tax without accusations of a desire to destroy the Canadian economy being thrown around.
If we get beat to carbon pricing by the US AND China it will be a sad, sad day for Canada. I guess as long as Albertans have jobs in their traditional industries it doesn’t matter.
Wow, this got off onto a anti Harper rant pretty quickly. Really the take away message from this is that pricing is doable and necessary, and it will be sad if China is the one to shame the west into action rather than the other way around. Still, I’m learning Mandarin and Chinese history. I’ll be ready to serve our new global hegemon, or at least work in a company owned by one of their new green tech billionaires.
