McCain and the Reaper

I’ve been trying to figure out the Palin bump for a while. Somehow a social conservative VP to a very middle of the road republican is bringing in the base? What’s the deal here? The VP may have had a lot of power in the Bush administration, but it seems unlikely that McCain would be taking his orders from his second. There has been some talk of an Obama assassination, what about a McCain assassination carried out by the religious right that puts Palin into power for three years. McCain’s old age may not be the only threat to his ability to govern.

Even if it isn’t an assassination, perhaps the religious right now realizes that without their votes Obama will win, McCain can’t stay for more than one term, and there is the opportunity to sneak a crazy conservative into the presidency. There is now an acceptable “least bad” option for the base that gave Bush two terms. Be afraid, very afraid.

Speaking of older fellas with shaky health records, looks like a number of fairly credible sources are saying that Kim Jong Il suffered a stroke or cerebral hemorrhage sometime around the middle of August.

He underwent surgery and has since been recovering (possibly under the care of Chinese doctors), and has possibly been directing affairs from his hospital bed.

What is interesting is the Norks have recently threatened to reassemble the Yong'byong reactor, due to a failure to see eye to eye with the Americans over the requirement to verify the previously submitted declaration detailing their nuclear program. Was this strategy previously agreed upon before Kim got sick? Is it the product of someone (admittedly I don't know who the likely successor or interim CinC-DPRK is) temporarily taking the reigns? Kim dictating orders from bed?

I'm sure the GG response will be something about institutions, norms, processes and customs mattering more than individuals to determining outcomes. But as with the American election, unfortunately I'm just not sure if that's true.
