Poor Russia. It just goes to show how ignorant I still am about much of the world that I didn’t think of this the day after intervention in South Ossetia and Abhkazia. Turns out the Russians have some oppressed minorities, or even majorities longing to be free! Russia’s recognition of the breakaway Georgian republics has given them hope for their own independence, and may renew struggles which were halted in the wake of the suppression of the Chechen independence movement.
I don’t know how Russia would be able to rationalize what they did to Georgia with rekindled movements in their own borders which may end up flaring into violence. I guess the only problem is that no country bordering Russia would be willing to intervene on their behalf, and Russia still has a lot of oil. Still, if Russia is forced to deal with rebellion inside their own borders, the fewer problems they will cause us. I would rather see petro dollars invested in education and infrastructure, but if it comes down to Russians invading their neighbours or having a civil war, I choose civil war.
We shall see if the power of a state can trump the statist aspirations of its citizens, and if international norms and institutions can intervene effectively. My realist instincts do not bode well for the independence movements.
