FT has an interesting article about the idea of a China bailout of the US. They are the ones with all of the cash these days. I especially like the idea of setting up a social safety net as a conditionality for the bail out. Wouldn’t it be ironic and incredible if it was in fact China that forced the US to turn into a modern welfare state?
Still, I’m not convinced that Chinese leaders will be motivated to make this offer. If they are spending money, there may be insurmountable pressure to spend it domestically on increased demand rather than attempting to bail out the country that has been blamed for causing the problems in the first place. Even if the offer was made I doubt that it would even be possible for America to accept it. I think many Americans would rather face poverty than be bailed out by China.
Still, I can dream, and if it is China to the rescue, they will have demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt their commitment to a constructive new world order in which they are a key participant.
