As the financial system collapses around me, my thoughts turn to China as they often do. While I am concerned about what might become of China if economic troubles lead to political turmoil, I am thinking more and more now about the situation of China avoids that turmoil in the midst of the worst financial crisis since the 1930s. If the Party is able to weather a recession in China, what then might come along to challenge its legitimacy? If there are still hundreds of millions of people alive 30 years from now who have been removed from poverty in their lifetime, and if, despite economic catastrophe, the government is still legitimate in the eyes of the populace, I don’t think there will be an event before the generation that came of age in the 80s is dead that will shake off the CCP’s control. Perhaps this is a disconcerting thought, but I’ll reserve judgment until I see how Beijing participates in the resolution of the current crisis. I’m all for China stepping up and taking its place at the big tables of the world.
We could be looking at a world in 5 years where China is the savior and the US’s ability to shape the course of global events is severely constrained.
