I think there is a big issue on the horizon of American politics that no one seems to be talking about. The economy, pension and medicare reform, and ballooning budget deficits are all large issues, but another lurks under the surface. We have had 8 years of an administration which has taken a dim view of oversight of any kind. We have seen some of the fallout of these practices in the form of questionable techniques for extracting information from prisoners, and on the crafting of US energy policy. My concerns is that when a new administration takes over, be it McCain on Obama, much of their initial time will be spent figuring out what was going on in their departments under the Bush administration. Questions may arise over the legality of some actions, and time will have to be spent deciding if and how much information needs to be made public, and how to go about changing the practices within the bureaucracy.
Perhaps noting will come of this, but I do worry that it will provide a huge distraction to a new administration with a great deal of better things to be doing with its time.
