Can China be the World's Saviour?
There is a lot of talk about China stimulating domestic demand in order to bring the world out of the current slowdown/crisis. Still, Chinese people don’t want to buy the same things they are selling to us. The entire economic system inside China will have to shift in order to meet Chinese instead of American demand. In addition the other links in the supply chain must also change causing problems for countries outside China which supply it. They will take time to adjust, or at the very least suffer as China moves all its production capacity inside its own borders. Perhaps this wish is more dangerous to other developing countries and perhaps the developed world than we realize. At the very least a strategy to shift to domestic consumption will take time to emerge. China can only build so many roads at once.
