Why don’t we let the Islamists win elections? The way I see it, the situation is win-win, or at least win-neutral.
So an Islamist government takes over the country in a democratic election. Suddenly they actually have to start delivering on their promises of “Islam is the answer”. I find it unlikely that they will be able to deliver on such promises, especially not in the short term. Because of the inability to deliver what was promised, Islamist governments would quickly see their legitimacy erode, and space for other political groups would emerge. If they are able to deliver on their promises, great! Their people are better off, there might be another country with a government less friendly to America, but that’s a big club already.
There are fears about handing the state apparatus over to an Islamist government which would be unfriendly towards America or Israel. Fine. But unless that country is Pakistan; and even if it were Pakistan I’m not overly concerned. We have all seen what happens when Israel’s Arab neighbours try to attack it openly. If the Islamists want to organize an army and fight on an open field that’s even better than having to wait for them to fail politically. Nothing undermines a regime’s legitimacy than a crushing military defeat after being elected on a platform of “Islam is the answer."
There are also fears that an Islamist government would begin to fund terrorism against the West or our interests. This may also be true, but the increase would be so small compared to what Iran and Saudi Arabia already spend that I don’t think it’s really a cause for concern. The Islamist countries that really can cause damage to America already have Islamist governments which do not appear to be going anywhere. They are also already so wealthy that financing opposition to the West is not an object.
Open up the door, see what happens. Things for the West can’t get any worse and for a real revolution to be had, there needs to be sacrifice on the part of those who are revolting. Without that any commitment to a new order is shallow.
