I was talking with a friend of mine last night and was shocked to hear him say that kids these days are in fact getting smarter. I pressed him a bit on that point and what he really meant was that the smart kids are getting smarter while the others are being left behind. The more I think of this, the more I’m inclined to agree. There are so many options for kids who are motivated to learn on their own that weren’t available even 5 years ago. I’m thinking here about resources like Wikipeida specifically, and the internet its self more broadly. If you are interested and motivated there is no limit to what you can teach yourself at almost no cost.
On the flip side there are many more distractions now than 5 years ago it seems. Cell phones allow you to be distracted at any time. It’s been a long time since I’ve been to high school, but I can imagine what rampant cell phone use can do to classroom learning. As much as there is Wikipedia, facebook and other sources of distraction on the internet can consume countless hours for little real gain. It is easy to fall into these time sinks as they are often mindless and as the network grows, so to does the incentive to be inside it.
There is already a growing gap between the wages of skilled workers and those of unskilled ones. If the pace of economic globalization continues at even half the pace of the last decade the competition for those now entering school will be fierce. Those with ambition will be able to get high paying jobs wherever those jobs may present themselves. Those who played Xbox in their parent’s basement will be hard pressed to find fulfilling employment.
We really need to find a way of getting kids excited about learning at an early age. By the time they get to high school it’s probably already too late for many of them. Sadly I have no real suggestions on how to go about this, but isn’t that someone else’s job?

As someone who spent most of the morning playing video games, I resent the implication that they are a waste of time.
