Friday Insight

I had a profound insight today, based on something I read in "The New Cold War".

Lucas writes that:

A gosudarstvennik cares about the state’s prestige and strength; he believes it to be an expression, perhaps the highest expression, or society, culture, even of civilization. In other words, the Russian state exists not to serve the people, but as a project or mission with an almost supernatural basis.

This puts so many of the actions of Russia and China, but also other countries clearly into focus. When the West criticizes their governments, citizens feel like it is a direct and personal attack on what they have struggled for generations to build. We are attacking their families’ life work. It could even be made worse by the fact that they have no other party to vote for. They are receiving criticism and they can do nothing about it! That’s gotta be aggravating. Since in the West we look at government more as a service provider, it doesn’t matter when there is criticism because we are always looking for better service. This leads to a great deal of conflict in the international arena based simply on a misinterpretation created by different historical experiences.

How we teach the rest of the world that when we criticize their government we are not directly attacking them may be a difficult challenge especially since state controlled education systems in these countries shape the perceptions of their citizens from a very young age. Maybe it just takes time…maybe the first steps towards democracy need to be taken first, by those inside the country themselves. That may be the only way they will be able to separate criticism of their government from criticism of themselves.
