Of Europe and Energy

So once again Europe seems to be feeling the pinch of post Soviet disagreement. Gas flows to Europe flowing through Ukraine have been greatly reduced. I don’t really want to speculate on which of Russia or Ukraine is to blame. For Europe it doesn’t really matter. What is clear is that Europe is in a bad spot. They are being severely impacted by a disagreement which does not involve them. In this instance, my thoughts move to what would happen if Russia were to use energy as a weapon directly against Europe. There are so many reasons for the EU to move forward with non fossil fuel energy, and the near constant spats between Russia and its neighbours should add a sense of urgency to this endeavour.

Sadly this does not seem to be the case. Instead of the EU focusing their efforts on attempting to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine they need to focus on the real problem; dependence on fossil fuels. If this mindset could be changed one of two things will happen. Either Russia will shape up because it does not want to lose its largest market for energy, or Europe will develop an energy system independent of Russia and likely everyone in the region would be better off. The EU still seems to divided for real action on this front which is very unfortunate. The Europeans have been the leaders, at least in talking about climate change. This should provide them an opportunity to deal with greenhouse gas emissions and an unfriendly neighbour, but it looks like this will be another wasted opportunity.
