Propaganda…From Chinese Media?!

The BBC is reporting that Chinese intellectuals have signed an open letter calling for a boycott of state television news programmes because China's Central Television (CCTV) has turned its news and historical drama series into propaganda to brainwash its audience.

Is this shocking to anyone outside of China? I read China Daily on a pretty regular basis, and based on what they do/don’t cover compared to Western papers it is pretty obvious to me that it is essentially the propaganda publication for the central government. I guess my next question would be, what is the point of this open letter? Will anyone in China who doesn’t already realize this be able to read it? Will it be anything new to observers outside of China? Finally, what other options do people have? Is some biased news better than no news at all? Does CCTV really depend on viewership to sustain its self? Would a boycott open up new avenues for media penetration?

As always seems to be the case with China, there are far more questions than answers…even for something as simple as this. On the bright side, at least it’s criticism coming from inside China instead of outside. Still, when things like this happen in Russia, the first instinct of the government seems to be to blame foreign agitators for stirring up trouble in an otherwise peaceful society. I guess we will have to wait and see how things pan out.
