Since no one was willing to publish my letter to the editor about the cancellation of the Plains of Abraham battle reenactment, I'll post it here:
A few weeks ago separatists were riled up over Sarkosy’s implication that their politics are divisive. Their letter to him asked where he got the idea that they detested Canada. They wrote that they respect Canada, Canadian values, and the Canadian people. Contrast that with their actions, or absence thereof over the Plains of Abraham reenactment which has demonstrated either their delusion, or how little they truly believe what they wrote.
By opposing this reenactment, or by not coming out forcefully in its favour, Quebec leaders have demonstrated a fundamental lack of respect for history, for Canada, and for Canadians. Is Quebec the sole arbiter of what the acceptable parts of Canadian history are? I’m upset that the PQ’s response wasn’t along the lines of “it’s a reenactment of the history of Quebec and of Canada. The past is past, and we are comfortable with where Quebec stands today.” Are Quebec separatists really so insecure that they think seeing a battle reenactment will prompt English Canada to claim Quebec once again for King and Empire? Or that Quebecers will be so distraught over seeing the battle reenacted that they will turn their back on their culture? That seems a little rich.
The cop out by the National Battlefields Commission adds insult to injury. There is a threat of violence. So what? Don’t we have police? Can’t we detain people who openly threaten violence against others? Can we not protect a historical reenactment from a few troublemakers? It’s amazing that we tell Afghan girls not to be intimidated by the Taliban, but back in Canada, we are intimidated by one loud mouthed separatist. This makes me ashamed of Quebec, and embarrassed to be Canadian.
