Oh Russia, I guess when your country spans as many time zones as yours, it is easy to believe that people at one end have no idea what is going on in the other…unfortunately for you, I’m willing to bet that people in Beijing are watching closely…and if they aren’t maybe the Chinese government has a job for me!
Anyway, I was reading in the NYT about protests in Eastern Russia over import duties now being applied to cars, especially from Japan…but it gets better:
Senior officials have portrayed the organizers as nefarious profiteers controlled by foreign agents who want this region to secede from Russia.
Now where do I recall hearing similar arguments? Replace Russia with Georgia, and we could almost be back to the summer! Russia just better hope that none of those car importers have Japanese passports, or heaven forbid Chinese ones. Who knows, after feeling so let down by their government maybe people in eastern Russia will start mailing away to Beijing for them…When the riot police arrive from Moscow to quell the next round of violence, they may find themselves as overmatched as the Georgians did this summer.
