Getting What He Deserves

I had mixed feelings about the referendum on ending term limits in Venezuela. On the one hand, I would have liked to see Chavez out of office and hopefully someone more competent at the helm. At the same time, I was concerned that the next person to take power would be left holding the bag for all of Chavez’s big spending during his term. Now at least it seems that Chavez himself will have to explain the consequences of low oil prices and the looting of the central bank. I suppose in reality it will go something along the lines of “everything was fine until the US had their financial crisis, now things are bad and it’s all America’s fault”. Hopefully some people will ask why, during the good times, more wasn’t done to protect the people against the consequences of America’s actions. All those Soviet planes and AK-47s aren’t doing too good of a job of protecting Venezuela from America now.

At least now it will probably be another coup ousting Chavez from office as things get progressively worse and he no longer has central bank reserves or high oil prices to save him, instead of him staging a coup against whoever was just elected to replace him. All I hope is that the rest of Latin America holds together and they all learn from the consequences of Chavez’s misguided socialist agenda.
